Ray Wears, Ray Benson Rip Off, Phone: 8722163518

I would like to share my unpleasant experience after receiving an email through my contact form from my website. Reason for this post is to warn other website designers and developers about “Bob Wayne” (which is probably not his real name), his email: bobwayne794@gmail.com and phone number (872) 216 – 3518 who requested an informational website for his small clothing company and a domain: www.bbwears.com or bwwears.com. Something didn’t seem right when I found out he was from Chicago, Illinois and I was from New Hampshire.

You might find him under Ray Wears, Ray Benson ???

His first email through my contact form was:

Hello,
Am Bob, I would like to know if you can handle an informational website design for my new company? kindly get back to me ASAP so i can send you the job details.
Thanks,
Bob

There were a few more emails between us and this was the final email I’ve received from “Bob” prior to my investigation and a little research about this hoax:

“I understand the content for this site would be needed so work can start asap but my graphic designer has no facility to take credit card payment at the moment. I want you to send me a pay invoice of $7,550.00 with the 3% Cc company charges, you will deduct $2,500.00 as 50% deposit for the design of the website and you will send the remaining $5,000.00 to the graphic
designer that has the text content and the logo for my website so once he receive his Fee, He would send the text content and logo needed for my website, sending of funds would be after money clears into your account.
I would have sent him the money myself but am on a business trip right now for the progress of my business and i need the site ready before i get back and i am cashless, only got my credit card here.
You will be charging my card for the balance once you done with the site.
Please get back to me asap with the contract so i can proceed with payment.”

Thanks

Really? Did he really think I would fall for it?

After a google search thankfully I came across this website, http://www.ripoffreport.com
and could’t believe what I was reading.

Everything was identical to what happened to me.
Please read!!!

  1. Yes he contacted me as well as “Grey.”

Asking for an estimate and telling me he was out of town due to a surgery and illness.

Thanks for the heads up, I knew something was SUPER funky.

  2. Thanks for the heads up. I got a submit form request (1/9/16) from bobwayne794@gmail.com with an upper-end budget and the following message: “This is Bob, I would like to know if you can handle an informational website design for my new company? kindly get back to me ASAP so i can send you the job details.” So I won’t even bother emailing back.

    1. I am so glad this post helped you. Please don’t waste your time replying back to him, he is obviously a scam artist!

  3. I received the same email from this Bob Wayne. I sent him a proposal and he replied back in like 5 minutes accepting the estimate. ” I am ready to make payment now,I understand the content for this site would be needed so work can start asap but my graphic designer has no facility to take credit card payment at the moment.

I want you to send me a pay invoice of $5,967.50 with the cc company charges, you will deduct $1,917.50 as 50% deposit for the design of the website and you will send the remaining $4,000.00 to the graphic designer that has the text content and the logo for my website so once he receive his Fee, He would send the text content and logo needed for my website, sending of funds would be after money clears into your account.

    What a hoax!

    1. I am glad you caught it on time. I am grateful for this website: http://www.ripoffreport.com/ where I found his phone number related to his little scam. Please spread the word on your blog or mention it to your web designer friends! He even called my cell phone, but I couldn’t understand him. All he cared about was if I except payments by credit card. I said no, only PayPal, which is very secure. He said he had an “issue” with them. That is when the bell started ringing… At least I didn’t waste more time with him. Thank you for your comment.
